½ DAY GUIDED FLY FISHING - HIGH COUNTRY RIVERS
Headwater tributaries of the Uncompahgre River and its abundant small alpine creeks offer guests a fun and scenic style of fly fishing for native trout in an incredibly picturesque setting perfect for anglers looking for a genuine Colorado experience in the high country.
Located in some of the most beautiful settings in Colorado, our expansive access to fly fishing in the Uncompahgre National Forest district and its hidden trout creeks and lakes offer endless miles of access to fly fishing for creek-size gems. Smaller in size but eager to bite, high-country trout are not only perfect for beginners, kids, and families but devoted high-country anglers who also appreciate the benefits of high alpine creek fly fishing. Brook, Cutthroat and Rainbow trout can all be found exploring this brief but spectacular season.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Think About Your Goals
What do you want out of your half-day high country trip? When booking, communicate with our reservation team and let them know any physical limitations and what you’d like to focus on during your trip. Want to have fun and relax with family and friends? Work on improving self-reliance? Perfect your cast or fly presentation? As we say, “it’s your trip”, so be sure to convey your goals and objectives in advance to maximize the experience.
Our Half Day High Country waters are only 20 minutes from our fly shop; these are some of our home waters that make you feel you got away from it all in just 4 hours. The High Country is most productive from July through September, but the weather can allow for start times as early as June and run as late as the end of October. Speak to our reservations staff to find out current conditions and the best time to fish the Cimarron High Country.
We know the High Country Rivers and Streams
As the longest permitted outfitter in the Cimarron Forks and Uncompahgre National Forest High Country, we pride ourselves on our dedication to this beautiful alpine resource we are lucky to call our backyard with a view. As locals, our understanding of these backcountry fisheries is unequal. Ask us how to “connect the dots” to include your Cimarron high country fly fishing trip as part of a regional day trip when considering other nearby activities or destinations near Ouray or Silverton, Colorado.
Our access to the high country is centrally located between Ridgway, Ouray, and Silverton, an easy drive from our shop. With vast angler access, covering countless miles of creeks and streams, some hiking and walk-wading in the river is necessary, so let our staff know if lite hiking is your limit. Please be sure to acclimate to our higher elevation to ensure comfort and safety for your trip.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
Whether you have gear, are traveling lite, or are new to the sport, we take care of your fishing equipment needs. We provide rod/reel and waders/boots or wade socks/boots (conditions dependent). Our guides provide access to their personal arsenal of hand-selected tools of the trade, including site-specific flies, nets, leader/tippet, nipper/forceps, floatant, indicators, and more. However, if you prefer to bring any of your gear, please do! Your guide is happy to help you get to know it better.
Low Client-to-Guide Ratio
For your benefit, we exclusively offer a low client-to-guide ratio of two clients per professional guide, so everyone receives hands-on attention and personalized service to help read the waters, form good habits, and understand local fishery behaviors. All guests receive private instruction with a professional fly fishing guide, with no mixed parties.
Trips routinely meet and depart from our Fly Shop in Ridgway, with a thorough check-in process to ensure you are prepared. From there, your guide provides round-trip transportation to your fishing location as part of the experience, or you are welcome to follow the guide to the resource in your vehicle if you prefer.
