After the thrill of spring fishing season on the GGNCA Lower Gunnison River and the fabled “Stone Fly Hatch” have wound down, anglers and guides alike turn their attention to drift boat fishing farther downstream. With a myriad of conflicting conditions and reports on current drought conditions throughout Colorado, anglers have been left chasing water instead of fish and high and dry on many traditional float fishing rivers throughout the state. This demand on water downstream inadvertently gives us the highest and best river levels of the year – making for prime fishing habitat, cooler water temperatures and ideal conditions for aquatic insects to proliferate – great for sizable trout and consistent feeding habits.
While not inherently an easy section to walk wade fish, it pays to visit this section with experienced float fishing guides, familiar with the waters, where the fish are and why they’re there. Otherwise, wind, heat and solid flow with little river structure can quickly add up to a frustrating walk wade day on unfamiliar waters.
