With extensive public access and prime Colorado dry fly fishing that even the novice angler can experience; the San Miguel River offers a rare look into one of Colorado’s last freestone (undammed) trout rivers. Abundant insect hatches and crystal clear water create the perfect habitat for Rainbow…, Brown and Cutthroat Trout. The San Miguel twists its way through red-rock walls, sandstone canyons, and forested banks.
Things to Consider on your Full Day Guided Fly Fishing Trip:
- Think About Your Goals – What do you want to get out of your trip, communicate with staff ahead of time. Let them know what you’d like to focus on during your trip (i.e. just want to have fun and catch fish? Or work on casting techniques and reading the water, etc.). We cater our trips to our client’s wants & needs.
- Timing – Since the San Miguel is a freestone river there are certain times throughout the year when fishing is effected by runoff or ice. These issues are mainly experienced during peak runoff (May-June) or during flash flooding when the region is experiencing heavy rains. Discuss the best time to fish the San Miguel with our reservations staff, to increase your chances of having a productive day on the water.
- Hiking – Taking a walk wade trip on the San Miguel, does involve some hiking and the ability to walk-wade in the river; it is also at a higher elevation than Ridgway. Make sure you’re in physical shape for this trip and watch for altitude sickness (stay hydrated). If you’re unsure, discuss it with one of our reservations specialists.
