The San Miguel River, with its extensive public fishing access, beckons anglers to experience one of Colorado’s last freestone (undammed) trout streams. Gin clear water, coupled with prolific insect hatches, provide even beginner anglers a rare opportunity to experience classic Colorado dry fly fishing to eager Rainbow, Brown and Cutthroat Trout. As the San Miguel meanders its way through red-rock walls, scenic sandstone canyons, and forested banks, expect to be amazed at the river’s serene riparian ecology.
Things to Consider on your ½ Day San Miguel Guided Fly Fishing Trip:
- Think About Your Goals – What do you want to get out of your trip, communicate with staff ahead of time. Let them know what you’d like to focus on during your trip (i.e. just want to have fun and catch fish? Or work on casting techniques and reading the water, etc.). We cater our trips to our client’s wants & needs.
- Timing – Since the San Miguel is a freestone river there are certain times throughout the year when fishing is extremely difficult. This is mainly a short time during peak runoff in late spring, discuss the best time to fish the San Miguel with our reservations staff, to increase your chances of having a productive day on the water.
- Hiking – Taking a walk wade trip on the San Miguel, does involve some hiking and the ability to walk-wade in the river; it is also at a higher elevation than Ridgway. Make sure you’re in physical shape for this trip and watch for altitude sickness (stay hydrated). If you’re unsure, discuss it with one of our reservations specialists.
