Fly Fishing Western Colorado

Fly Fishing Western Colorado in late summer and Fall are some of the best times to fly fish.  The Temps. are a bit lower and the sun is shinning.  On the Gunnison River this time of year a Driftboat trip or a Walk Wade trip is in order.  The Gunnison River through the Black Cayon and Lower Gunnison is hopper city, Dry Dropper rigs are the way to go, but another rod setup with a nymphing rig is also a good idea for the beautiful long runs.  As the water temps. cool in the fall on the Gunnison River the Blue Wing Olives start to hatch in swarms.  The dry fly action is none stop during this hatch.  Late fall is the best time to throw big nasty streamers, the largest fish in the river will move for these flies.   RIGS Fly Shop offers 3 Day trips through the Gunnison Gorge, 1 day Driftboat trips on the Lower Gunnison River, and Full Day Walk Wade trips in the Gunnison Gorge

The Uncompahgre River at Pa-Co-Chu-Puk is one of the best tail water fisheries in Western Colorado “Paco” as the locals call it is full of great runs, pools, and riffles.  Green Drakes start to emerge in August yes August, wich is very late for most Drake hatches.  This Green Drake hatch last for about three weeks and they are huge size 12-10’s.  About the second week in August the Pink Cahill’s start to emerge.  This is on the the best hatches I have ever seen.  This hatch happens every day at 1 0’clock p.m. no matter what, you have to love that.  September on the Uncompahgre is one of my faveret times to fish this tail water.  By mid September the flows have started to drop, the biggest fish in the river (30″ +) start to show them selfs.  Beatis and Midges are on the menu this time of year.  RIGS Fly Shop offers full and half day trips on the Uncompahgre River.

The Cimarron Forks, is your place to chace wild fish up in the high country.  You also get the added beauty of the fall colors as the Aspen trees start to turn.  You can’t beat the East, Middle and West fork’s of the Cimarron’s for the fishing and the beauty.  The flows on the Cimarron’s have dropped by this time of year, and the fish are strapping on there feed bags getting ready for the winter.  Grey Drakes will still be hatching in low numbers,  but the fish love to eat them.  Any dry fly attrachtor will work on the Cimarron’s.  RIGS Fly Shop offers Full Day Trips as well as Tenkara Full Day Trips on the Cimarron’s.
